If you are looking at replacing your windows and feeling a little overwhelmed by the options, you are not alone. It is one of the most common conversations we have with homeowners here at Amazing Double Glazing Co. The good news is that once you know what to look for, choosing the right window style is actually pretty straightforward.
Here is our practical guide to help you work out which uPVC window styles are right for each room in your home.
Start With One Simple Question: Do You Want It to Open?
Before you think about anything else, the first thing to decide is whether you need a window that opens at all.
Some rooms need ventilation and airflow. Others, like stairwells or feature walls, are better suited to a large fixed window that maximises light without any moving parts.
Getting this right for each room makes everything else much easier.
Fixed Windows: Maximum Light, Zero Fuss
If you want a big, beautiful view and maximum natural light, a fixed window is often the best choice. Fixed windows do not open, which means they offer excellent insulation, a completely airtight seal and a very clean, modern look.
They work particularly well for:
Living room feature walls
Stairwells
Areas where you want an uninterrupted view of the garden
Spaces where ventilation is handled another way
A popular combination we install regularly is a large fixed window with smaller opening windows either side or above. You get the wow factor of the big picture window with the practicality of ventilation where you need it.
Casement Windows: The Classic All Rounder
Casement windows open outward from the side, like a door. They are probably the most versatile window style available and suit both modern and traditional homes.
They are a great choice when:
You want maximum ventilation and airflow
You like a clean, classic look that works in any room
Security is a priority, as casement windows lock tightly when closed
Casement windows work well in living areas, bedrooms and kitchens where you want good airflow and a secure, weathertight seal when closed.
Awning Windows: Perfect for Wet Weather
Awning windows are hinged at the top and open outward from the bottom. The big advantage is that you can leave them open even when it is raining without water getting in.
They are ideal for:
Bedrooms where you want overnight ventilation without worrying about rain
Bathrooms where you need airflow but also privacy
Laundries and utility areas
Awning windows are also commonly used above fixed windows or above doors to add ventilation to a space without sacrificing the view.
Tilt and Turn Windows: The Smart Choice for Upper Floors
Tilt and turn windows are probably the most clever design on the market. They have two opening positions in one window. Tilt them inward at the top for secure background ventilation, or swing them fully open inward like a door for maximum airflow and easy cleaning.
The cleaning angle is a big one. If you have upstairs windows, cleaning the outside of a standard window can be awkward or even dangerous. With a tilt and turn window you can clean both sides of the glass safely from inside the room.
They are particularly popular for:
Upper floor bedrooms and bathrooms
Any room where cleaning access is difficult
Homeowners who want secure ventilation without fully opening the window
Sliding Windows: Clean and Contemporary
Sliding windows open horizontally along a track. They have a very clean, contemporary look and work well in modern homes where you want a wide opening without the window swinging out into a space.
They are a good option for:
Kitchens, especially above a sink or bench where an outward opening window would be awkward
Living areas that open onto a deck or alfresco
Any space where you want a wide, open feel
What About Tinted Glass?
Once you have decided on your window style the next question is often about glass. Do you want clear glass or would tinted glass work better for your home?
Tinted glass reduces glare and heat from direct sunlight, which can make a real difference in rooms that get a lot of afternoon sun. It also adds a layer of privacy without needing to rely on curtains or blinds during the day.
It is worth thinking about which rooms face north or west, as these are the ones that tend to get the most sun throughout the day and benefit most from tinted glass.
Our Advice: Think Room by Room
The most common mistake homeowners make is choosing one window style for the whole house. In reality, different rooms have different needs.
A good starting point is to go through each room and ask yourself:
Do I need this window to open?
How much ventilation do I want?
Is cleaning access going to be an issue?
Does this room get a lot of direct sun?
What view do I want from this window?
Answering those questions for each room will quickly point you toward the right style.
